So we meet again, you marvelous beauty. I must admit that this is one of my favourite whiskies in the “core-range”-category. This whisky has been matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks, with the addition of Pedro Ximenes and oloroso sherry casks. Enough said, let’s have a go at these delicious drops!
Apples, both red and green. Vanilla and strawberry ice cream. A very malty taste that kind of transitions from sugared corn flakes to foam bananas. The ex-bourbon notes are very prominent here, especially white wine that I always like to relate to. But still there are some shy sherry notes peeking out of the bourbon-y nose in the shape of truckloads of oranges and a dash of cinnamon.
Oh, you have been dearly missed, old friend! A wave, smooth as silk crashes in and tumbles around in your mouth. Fresh sorbet with a taste of oranges and sweet lemons, white wine again, vanilla fudge and mashed applesauce. This taste goes on for so long, it almost makes me forget to swallow!
Very long and creamy finish that warms your mouth. The ice cream comes back together with the maltyness from the nose. This is so enjoyable!
Avslutningsvis vill jag säga att ett whiskyskåp har den perfekta grunden om du har den här flaskan, tillsammans med Glenfarclas 15 och Lagavulin 16.
I’m surprised that the sherry notes are much easier to find in this sample, compared to the bottle I used to have about two years ago. majbe it’s my memory that fails me, or majbe my taste buds have had a change of heart.
To sum this up, I would like to say that every whisky shelf, bar or collection has the perfect base-range if you have this whisky, together with the Glenfarclas 15 and Lagavulin 16.
