Reviewing a Duo of World Whisky Finished in Peated Cask, Kavalan Peated Cask vs Amrut Peated Cask
Lately I’ve been doing a few reviews (when I wasn’t too busy with life) of multiple bottles, and while I don’t think it’s gonna be a permanent thing and I do plan to do single whiskies reviews, I do have another duo review today – two world whiskies matured (fully or finished) in peated cask, ex-bourbon only, both from climates which leads to rapid maturing. So they share common traits but there are still some glaring differences: different distilleries in different regions in the world and different climate. Single cask vs vatting of a 2-3 casks. The Amrut was finished in...

Domaine Boingnères 1984 ‘Folle Blanche’
I’m afraid I have very little experience with artisan armagnac , the single-distilled sister of cognac, but I’m always interested to discover new malternatives.
Domaine Boingnères , run by the Lafitte family, was founded in 1807 and is located in Le Frêche, in the Grand Bas-Armagnac region. For six generations is has been praised for its quality.
This particular example is unusual as it is distilled from a single grape varietal: Folle blanche , the traditional grape in Armagnac, as it used to be in Cognac before the phylloxera. The company focuses on Folle Blanche (50%) but also uses Ugni...

Kinahan’s 10 Year Old
Kinahan’s is a brand of Irish whiskey with a long history. Daniel Kinahan opened a wine and spirits enterprise in Trinity Street, Dublin in 1779. He quickly made a name for good whiskey.
In 1807, Charles Lennox, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, was so impressed with this whiskey that he ordered all barrels at the Kinahan family cellars to be kept exclusively for his private use, marking each cask with “L.L.” This mark still adorns each and every bottle.
The company merged and the brand disappeared but the Kinahan’s LL brand was relaunched in 2015. While Kinahan’s isn’t producing its...

Small Barrel Whiskey Aging Explained
Have you ever wondered why many craft distillers seem to be fond of diminutive barrels? It’s not because they haven’t learned how to lift with their knees. According to Mark McDavid, co-founder of Ranger Creek Distilling in San Antonio, their smaller 5-gallon and 25-gallon barrels yield a very different whiskey from their standard 53-gallon. “The way I describe them is oak forward, punchy, and compact bourbons,” says McDavid. The difference arises from the greater surface area of oak exposed to each bottle, which increases dramatically as barrels get smaller; a law first described by Galileo in 1638. Some promote this...

The Best Whiskies For Grilling Season
Memorial Day weekend is the official start of grilling season and—for many of us—outdoor drinking. While beer is a natural pairing at a cookout, don’t feel the need to set your whisky aside on those long summer days. Many summer grilling staples pair naturally with whisky—just keep the firewater away from the flames, folks! One pro tip: even if you usually drink your whisky neat, consider throwing an ice cube or two into your dram if you’re out on the patio or lawn. It’ll help temper the heat of the season, plus it’s refreshing!
