Dewar Rattray Arran Tasting Notes

A.D Rattray Arran 2011 (5 year old) 57.3%

Bourbon Cask No 4/ Dist 2011 Btl: 2016/ Tasted: Nov 2016

The alcohol level makes the noise feel pretty tight, however it’s quite gristy with white fruit and balsamic, malty notes. Slightly herbal with late vanilla, apricot and slightly perfumed floral notes.

The palate is tight and gristy with white fruit, vanilla, malt and developing aromatic barley. The finish is a little masked by the alcohol but it does show some milk and white chocolate and sweet coffee and toffee.

A drop of water makes it gorgeously citric with tangerine, orange blossom,...

Mackillop’s Choice Laphroaig Tasting Notes

Mackillop’s Choice Laphroaig 1990 (22 year old) 52.1%

Bourbon Cask 11731/ Dist: Oct 1990 Btl: Mar 2013/ Tasted: Apr 2013

The nose opens with a gentle ashy brininess and a huge chunk of shimmering vanilla oak. That oak is incredibly chunk and adds a delicious vanilla weight and it is pretty oaky by ‘phroaig standards but there is plenty of balancing exotic fruit – greengage, kiwi, green pineapple, green banana and a touch of barley. With time some smoked meat becomes evident along with a light medicinal, tcp note and a touch of iodine. Finally the oak pushes through and...

Mackillop’s Choice Scapa Tasting Notes

Mackillop’s Choice Scapa 1991 (23 year old) 55.9%

Bourbon Cask 1191/ Dist: Mar 1991 Btl: Sept 2014/ Tasted: Nov 2016

A dark, malty and violety nose. Quite coastal and salty. Very much old skool Scapa with mature oak, and almost Tequila-esque, pulped, peppery fruit. Now that’s a unique nose! Superbly balanced and mature with late hints of earth, wood smoke, dunnage, tobacco and vanilla pod.

The palate is full and malty, but like the nose it displays that wonderful, old Scapa coastal, windswept character. Tobacco laced baked fruit, earth, wood smoke and grippy coffee’d tannins follow. Extremely salty on the...

Nordic Whisky #127 – Gjoleid Blindpassasjeren

image

Gjoleid Blindpassasjeren, 4 YO, 47 % Here is the second new Norwegian whisky in two weeks. Not bad, not bad at all! Again I am looking at a release from Arcus, using the Gjoleid brand.
